Why is there a green line under some words in a message that I am typing and
sometimes a red line under some words is this grammar check and spell check?

Yes, red means it's most likely spelled wrong (right-
click the red-line word for suggestions). Green line
means the grammar is not very good (again, right-click
for suggestion).

Both of these features can be disabled under the Tools
field.
