I cannot get my new laptop to send mail via windows webmail.Receives ok.Gone
through the account configuration several times but no joy.I am using a WiFi
broadband connection. The servers I want to connect to are ntlworld &
wanadoo.co.uk

I am having the same problem as John. I switeched internet providers and now
I can not send emails using windows mail. I can using versizon, but not
windows.

The error message is:

Connecto to server has failed. Account: incoming.verizon.net, Server:
outgoing.verizon.net, Protocol: SMTP, Port:25, Secure(SSL): no, Socket
error: 10060, Error: 0x800ccc0e.

Can someone help?

What happens if you disable your Anti Virus from scanning incoming or outgoing emails. Does this issue stop???

When I disable McAfee Antivirus scanning I can send a simple text email but
still can't send emails with attachements.

When you get that send error, are you sending from home, or on a
laptop away from home?

Regarding the first error message, NTL is refusing you access to their
SMTP server because you are connecting via another provider,
wlms-broadband.com. In general, you must always use the SMTP
server that belongs to your connection provider.

This may also be the cause for the send failure with Wanadoo.

McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Disabling its email scanning is often not sufficient.
The only way you can prove or disprove that McAfee is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
and
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

However, with either of those, during the install phase you must select
'custom' install, and then deselect the email scanning module so it won't install.

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:

The type of Internet connection or router does not matter.
The difference between Verizon and Gmail is that the former
uses port 25, while the latter uses port 465. Port 25 is
usually blocked when away from one's home ISP. For more
on this policy see:
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently, substitute the SMTP
server belonging to that connection. This is a bit tricky, but if you want to go that
route, I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.

I didn't say that Verizon is doing the blocking. You said the problem
only happens when visiting your brother. I assume he has an ISP
other than Verizon. *That* ISP (like most ISPs) will not take kindly
to your attempt to use a port 25 SMTP server other than their own.

Incidentally, it is customary in newsgroups to quote the message
one is replying to. It makes for better continuity.

You understand it correctly. AT&T doesn't scan your email,
its routers blindly block any port 25 traffic unless it is
destined for their own mail server. Nowadays all large ISPs use
this port 25 blocking policy because it is strongly recommended
by the anti-spamming organizations.
