I am merging from Excel, I want the date format to carry over to my Word doc.
Is that possible

Not really - you could try

From the Tools menu in Word, select Options and then go to the General tab
and check the box against the "Confirm conversions at open" item. Then when
you attach the data source to the mail merge main document, you will be
given the option of using the DDE method of connection which should read the
data as you have it formatted in the table.

but it is probably easxier just to add a date switch to the field -

I read some where else that I would want to use MMMM/dd/yy in my switch to
get the entire name of the month, but where do I put that. I have never used
switches before.

Use Alt+F9 to toggle field codes. «Date_of_Event» will then be displayed as,
say { MERGEFIELD "Date_of_Event" }. Add the switch at the end of the field,
then use Alt+F9 to toggle back and F9 to update the field.
