Assuming this is an Excel worksheet you are using,
1. Get to the Open Data Source dialog box where you normally select the
workbook you want to use.
2. Select the workbook, and check Select Method, then click Open. You should
see an extra dialog box titled "Confirm Data Source", listing at least one
of the following (I haven't transcribed these exactly):
Microsoft Excel Worksheet via Converter...
MS Excel Worksheet via DDE...
Excel Files via ODBC
At themoment you are probably using the "DDE" option, which is the defualt
for Word 2000. If you see both the other options, it is, frankly, a toss-up
which to use. For quick results, I'd probably choose the Converter, but be
aware that you will be asked for connection information every time you
re-open your Word document.
3. Select either the Converter or ODBC, and click OK.
4. If you chose the Converter, you should see a new dialog box saying "Open
Document in Workbook" and a drop-down list. You should find and select the
sheet you want in this list and click OK. Ignore the "Format for MailMerge"
option - as far I know, it no longer makes any difference whether you check
it or not.
5. If you chose ODBC, you should see a new dialog box saying "Select table".
However, you probably won't see any tables listed. Click the Options button,
select all four checkboxes, and click OK. If you now see your sheet listed,
select it and click OK. Then use preview to check that you have got the
correct workbook. Why? Because the one you selected in Open Data SOurce is
not necessarily the one selected in the "Select table dialog", and the full
path name of the .xls file is often too long to display, so you cannot
necessarily see the name.
You may also find that the connection fails - if so, the chances are that
the full path name is too long and that you will need to move the workbook
to a folder with a much shorter name.
