machine (xp pro) now needs a boot floppy; machine will not boot from CD, and
so I can't (?) get into repair console. What to do ? SFC reports all ok
....more generally , how do I set hidden, system and read only files so that
they are NOT ? I 'd like to try putting on new versons of ntdetect.com
manually ....
Any thoughts welcomed ....

Barret,

if your computer booted from the CD before and stopped doing
that, then there has been a change either in the BIOS settings
or in the hardware, meaning a hardware defect.

No amount of changing the data on the hard disk will help.

If, however, the computer does boot from the CD, but then cannot
access the hard disk, that's a different matter.
