Since applying one of about 70 Updates , the computer wont standby or
hibernate.
Anyone have any idea which update it could be?

Its deffinately an update cause it all worked before applying updates.

What kind of machine are you running?
And with what OS?

This will better let us know exactly what the problem is...

Advent Pentium 4 550 HT 3.4GHz
1GB RAM 250GB SATA harddirve

OS : XP
OS SP's: SP2
OS Version :2002 Home OEM

By far the most common reason for a sudden failure to hibernate/standby is a
change to / or corruption of the video drivers. While not the only problem -
it's been my experience that this is the most frequent problem with
hibernation/standby issues.

The fix is to upgrade to the latest WHQL-certified drivers for your video
card. The most common cards available are based on nVidia or ATI graphics
chips - and you can get the WHQL certified drivers from their website.

The reason for WHQL certified drivers is that they've been certified by
Microsoft to work well with Windows.

While this may not be the fix for you - I feel that it's worth a try because
it's so easy to do and it solves well over 90% of the hibernate/standby
issues that I've seen. I spent several weeks swapping emails with Microsoft
tech support on this very issue - and it was the video drivers that caused
it. Although I had installed WHQL certified drivers - something had
corrupted them and I had to reinstall them to fix the problem.

No updating the graphics drivers isnt curing the problem :(

Now it means one of about another 69 updates could be the cause

anybody any idea which update it could be or which update section it could
be like

Hardware Updates
Optional software updates or
Office updates

im using Microsoft Update rather than windows update .
