Machine Hangs When Inserting DVD

A

Absolutely

Here's my setup:

Epox EP-9NDA3+
AMD 3000+ CPU
1 Gig DDR400 (2x512)
2 Matrox 160 Gig SATA Drives (RAID 0) on SATA 1 & 2
Matrox 60 Gig ATA133 Drive on Primary IDE
Sony DVD RW on Secondary IDE
ATI Radeon X700 Pro
Windows XP Pro w/SP2

When I insert a DVD it appears for a second that it is going to play, but
then machine hangs. I don't know if this is being caused by the ATI
drivers, the ATI DVD software, XP SP2, or what. I removed all the ATI
software except for the video drivers and it still hangs. I tried to
install the supplied Sony software (Nero DVD, Nero burning software, etc.),
but it also hangs the machine. The ATI CD works fine in it, as does the
Epox driver CD. In every other respect, the machine runs fine.

Any known issues with ATI Radeon drivers and SP2, or the other ATI
applications and SP2? I've searched the web and can find nothing related to
this. The ATI site is worthless for support, as it the Epox site. Haven't
tried the Sony site yet.

As mentioned, the starting point is ato-insert notification, regain some control over the process.

It could be anything from a program that is assigned to start up with auto-insert, through to the DVD player (is this video, audio, data?), through to a dodgy codec.

If you can fire up the DVD player seperately and point it to the disc, and then try to play... at what point does it freeze?

If it freezes when you hit play, grab g-spot and have a look at the codecs that are likely to be used. If any look dodgy, move them to the recycle bin.

It appears to be related to the ATI software. I blew out the machine and
reinstalled XP, trying the DVD after each app install. I loaded the Sony
(came with the DVD drive) apps first and tried to play a DVD. It didn't
play correctly, but nothing locked up (pixelated bigtime). As soon as I
installed the ATI software the problem started.

I’ve got the same problem with X600. The ATI DVD app stays alive until
I place a DVD in the drive. After the drive starts up and the drive
light goes through its series of flashing as things load, the app
hangs. The same thing happens with POWERDVD. However, Windows Media
Player and Real Player both play DVDs fine. This happens my two DVD
drives (both LG but different models). Oh yeh, CD’s play fine.

ATI has gone through with me all the usual steps (Chipset driver
upgrade, BIOS upgrade, DVD Flash upgrade etc.) My PC is now so
up-to-date it’s hard to believe.

So, ATI has finally agreed to replace the X600 card to see if that
will work.

If you have any success, PLEASE let me know. I’ve been working on this
problem for weeks.

FYI, AMD 64 3500+ with ASUS a8v-e Deluxe motherboard. Up to date XP2.

So far it appears that it may be the DVD drive itself. I had a Sony
DRU-720a. The machine would hang without fail when using the drive for
anything. It was installed and configured per Sony's recommendations.
Windows was reporting a CDROM failure, so I decided to take the drive back
and get a new one. Got another one and had the same problem. Finally
switched to a PacificDigital drive with pretty much the same capabilities
and so far it's been running well. Media Player dies now and then when
playing a CD, but Nero works without a problem for viewing and burning.

Looks like the reason for your DVD hangs is not the same as mine.
I have two drives and the hang occurs when using either. Mind you,
they are both LG drives so it’s always possible, but likely not very
probable, that the problem lies with LG drives. Naw, I really think
that’s a stretch.

I haven’t received the replacement X600 Pro card yet but after I do
install it, I’ll post the result, for your possible interest.

Would be interested in your results. Never tried an LG drive, but I did
talk to someone that had a similar problem and switched to a Lite-On drive
and fixed it.

Looks like the reason for your DVD hangs is not the same as mine.
I have two drives and the hang occurs when using either. Mind you,
they are both LG drives so it's always possible, but likely not very

I haven't received the replacement X600 Pro card yet but after I do

Well, the replacement X600 Pro card ATI sent me made no difference.
The problem remains, unchanged. I had sent them an official Problem
Report and will now wait for their reply to that.

I have another, older Athalon PC with a ATI RAGE 128 card. When I
switch my LG USB outboard DVD burner over to that PC, DVD’s play fine
under POWERDVD. So, it’s hard to assume that the problem is with the
burner itself.

I suppose it might be interesting to take that ATI RAGE 128 card out
of the old PC and subsitute it for the X600 card in the new PC. Then
try playing DVD’s through the LG outboard drive. I have to figure out
first if that PCI card can be inserted in my ASUS AV-8E Deluxe
m/board. It is a PCI Express board but it may have a PCI slot in it,
too. Gotta check when I have a free minute.

FYI, ATI updated their software (MMC etc.) on May 17. Those updates
did not help me. Might be of value to you, though.

Well, everything works now: POWER DVD 6 and ATI DVD.

Not sure what I did but I first erased most of the apps on the PC,
then re-installed XP, then re-loaded the VIA chipset driver, then
erased and reloaded all the ATI drivers. Had to reload the ATI DVD
Decoder a couple of times. After the first install, it couldn’t load
audio codecs. ATI then told me to install the codecs from:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=294&s=95

Actually, that didn’t seem to be the solution but it may have helped.
Who knows?

I don’t think re-installing XP really did the trick but CYBERLINK tech
support had suggested it when I reported that I got CATASTROPHIC ERROR
messages when trying to install POWERDVD 6.

Wish I could tell you what really solved the problem but I ended up
doing so much, over and over, I’m not sure what happened.

But at least I know now that the apps do work, the DVD’s don’t hang
and it’s all related somehow to the installation process and, perhaps,
ensuring one has the latest drivers.
