Disappointing frame rates out of 9800Pro All-in-Wonder.

Hello,

I've just installed an All-in-Wonder 9800Pro and my frame rates are no
better than they were with my old 9600XT 256. Since the 9800 run at a
faster clock speed I expected I'd get better perfomance. I've even set
Direct3D options to Performance rather than Quality. I've been playing at
only 1024 x 768 resolution. I'm getting an average of 55.75 frames per
second in Unreal Tournament 2004. With my 9600XT 256mb I was getting an
average of 65 frames per second. I've also had low frame rates in Need for
Speed Underground 2. And I'm only running each at 1024x 768.

I've installed the drivers that came with the card. And I've run the driver
uninstall program and installed the latest driver available on ATI's site.
I've also installed
the latest Intel chipset drivers for my motherboard

My System Specs:

Dell Dimension 4500
2.8Ghz Pentium IV
1 Gig of ram
36 Gig Western Digital drive
250 Gig Maxtor drive
250 Gig Seagate drive
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2
ATI Radeon 9600XT 256 mb
52X Lite-On CD-RW/DVD drive
8x Sony DVD+/-RW drive.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Jeff

Try running a program called Driver Cleaner 3. This will clean out all
video drivers from your computer when you choose the correct option. I
would then install your AGP drivers from your chipset first and then
reinstall your video card drivers.

Am I Batman or Superman? I'm so confused.

Also, I did a 3dMark 2003 test and it scored 5291. When I did the online
comparison it seemed like that was a decent score for this card with a CPU
between 2 and 3Ghz (mine is 2.8Ghz). But my games (UT2k4 and NFS
Underground 2) suck..

Would it matter that I've only got a (Dell rated) 250 Watt power supply and
3 hard drives? I read the documentation for the card and it recommends at
least a 300Watt PS, but several other people with the same model Dell that I
have said that they've gotten the 9800 to work with thier systems.

Would upgrading my power supply boost my card's performance?

Thanks,

Jeff

Are you sure it runs at a faster clock speed? According to here:
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20050705/index.html the 9600XT
runs at 500MHz versus 380MHz for the 9800Pro. The 9800Pro does have
supperior memory performance (680MHz vs. 600MHz), and more pipelines (8
vs 4). Personally I would have gone with the GeForce 6600 (unless you
needed the All-In-Wonder part).

Also keep in my the Catylist drivers for the 9600XT have built in
overclock capability (it's called Overdrive, mine runs at 527MHz). Have
you tried any of the third party drivers (Omega, etc.), they'll include
tweaks to maximize the performance from the new card.
