Mac Word 10 documents open as garbage in Word 2003 on PC

We have a situation where a user was receiving documents from someone in Mac
Word 10 format and she says she was able to open them as they came in a
couple of weeks ago. Now, when she receives the documents they open up as
garbaged text. Trying this on other machines on our network I get the same
results except sometimes it will pop-up the file conversion dialog (which
none of the choices works). We can use a conversion product to convert the
files, but the fact is Word 2003 used to open the files. I have also found
that the Open Source word processor opens the files fine. The files will not
open with Office 2007 either. The only machine in our environment that will
open them is a test workstation off the network. Any idea what might be
missing from our Word installs to enable converting a MAC Word file on Open?

I have the same issue occurring in a clients network environment. I do not
understand why since Office updates a few weeks ago this is happening!

I have a similar problem. Prior to 12th March I could open Word 10
attachments from a Mac, and now I can't. It seems to happen with word
documents (created on a Mac) and either opened from Outlook, or saved from
Outlook onto the desktop and then opened. I've just gone back through stored
emails with word doc (mac Word 10) attachments from 2006 that I know I've
opened without a problem and now I can't.
I don't know if this bit is helpful but If I use my servers web interface
with Internet Explorer and access the emails I can open the documents in IE6
from the server directly without a problem. Have tried removing the last
March 12th updates from a laptop, running the same setup as my desktop, but
that hasn't corrected it.

Any ideas

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
Microsoft Word/Office, Version 11.0, Build 8202

I just had this problem brought to my attention from one of my clients
and I am experiencing the same problem as you. If you open or save a
Mac word doc through Outlook 2003 its corrupt but using Outlook Web
Access works fine.

Ok, I did some digging and I think the problem is with Outlook 2003
security update KB945432 released 3/10/08. Removing that update fixed
the problem at my institution.
