Mac to PC conversion.

My wife created word docs on her Mac at school. I'm unsure of the version,
but they have all new equipment and Mac OS10, so it should be a recent
version of office.
I have the files on a flash drive. I can transfer them to my PC, but I
cannot open them.
When I try to open them, word tells me that it needs to install a converter.
I provide the disk and word does its thing. When it's done, the file opens
showing a few nonsense characters and nothing else.
How can I open these files on my PC?

Are you sure she used Office at her school?

There's no difference in the Word file format (since Word 97), although if
the file does not have the .doc extension, you may need to add it manually
or use File | Open from within Word.
