lsass.exe - System Error - Error Status: 0xc0000227

dude

After restoring system state to a DC with different
hardware, I had to run "upgrade repair" for the different
hardware.

After the reboot, it wants to re-run setup but continues
to come up with the error that Directory Services could
not be started. Everytime I click the OK button it
reboots the system. This happens in normal, safe mode,
and safe mode directory repair.

So how do I fix this error when I cannot boot up into
anything? and of course any ideas as to how to fix this
error? I have read a few articles but again i cannot boot
into anything to fix. eg.

us;311502&Product=win2000

Could I have older system files loaded now because of the
new install that may be causing the problem?

Any help is appreciated thanks.

That error can occur for a few reasons. Since you performed a restore you
should verify that the AD database is located on the drive that the OS
thinks it is located it on. Boot into AD restore mode and use ntdsutil to
do this. If the directory is located where it should be then you should
verify that the permissions on the drive are correct. I've included a few
links to articles that may resolve your problem.

I cannot boot into any mode, once the error appears it
hangs until you press OK which in turns reboots the server.

I can confirm exactly what dude is explaining here. I am experiencing
the same problem. It still tries to start DS, even in Dir Svc Res Mode.
I am attempting a Disaster Recovery Test to un-like hardware. After the
in-place upgrade, the server freezes during the h/w discovery. If you
reboot after that, this comes up wheter you F8 and choose DSRM or not.
It's driving me Nucking Futs. I've reached the same point at least a
dozen times. Nothing changes it. Please help, anybody.

I'm glad it's not just me that's go this.
I tried to remove Exchange 2000 from my test server running W2k-adv-srvr
(SP-3)and the DS threw a wobbler. After several attempts at fixing things I
thought I'd be clever and just re-install from CD. Things went OK upto the
re-boot after which it bombed with lsass.exe error 0xc00002e1 and suggested I
try rebooting in dir-rec-mode. Tried this, and every other mode as well, and
it comes back with exactly the same message.

Just to add icing to the cake, the re-install setup also seems to have
locked itself up. It kicks up in dir-rec-mode before the lsass.exe error and
keeps asking for file NTINF.CAT from the CD but all I can see there is
NTINF.CA_
I've tried to figure what tells the system to continue the setup so I can
remove it but I can't figure it out.

Any help with either of these would be appreciated.

dude,

I am now investigating the possibility that this may be a Hard Drive
size issue. When you restored to different H/W, was the system volume
or partition (the one containing the WINNT folder) smaller than the
original? According to documentation I've seen, it must be the same or
larger. There is no consideration mentioned concerning that the
difference might be in free space only. Ours was insignificantly
smaller. We are reconfiguring with a bigger array now, but I'd like to
compare notes.

Please, let me know.

Thanks,

Roger

Hello Roger,

As I understand your problem that after performing a Disaster recovery you
Domain Controller will boot in Lsass error code 0XC0000227.
Normally the Error c00000227 usually occurs when:
1 - Lsass cannot locate all the required files (ntds.dit, logs, etc)
2 - corruption of the ntds jet database
3 - permissions issue.

If you are unable to boot into Safe mode or DSRM to verify and the above
conditions,
Try Recovery Console or any other utility that will let you access the
system partition.
a Parallel install would be an option.

1- Check the registry (HKLM\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\NTDS\Parameters
And Locate the Values for the values for the path to Active Directory
Database.
2- Verify that the Files (NTDS.dit) is where registry refers too.
3- Verify permissions on NTDS folder.

For your reference see if any of the procedures in the following Articles
