Directory Services cannot start

I get this error on my W2K DC: "LSASS.EXE - System Error, security accounts
manager initialization failed because of the following error: Directory
Services cannot start. Error status 0xc00002e1.

Please click OK to shutdown this system and reboot into directory services
restore mode, check the event log for more detailed information".

I've tried the fixes recommended by MS KB258062, but upon running "ntdsutil
files repair" (last resort) i get "Error - 1018 database failure". The system
drive is compressed (i've since decompressed), and so i believe the database
is corrupt (beyond repair?). I need to get this server up asap, even if i
have to remove AD, but i can only run it in Safe Mode/AD Restore Mode, so no
DCPROMO. Any suggestions?

You need Directory Services Restore Mode to restore your latest working
System State Backup no?

A System State backup for this server does not exist, but as i said it can be
removed from AD if need be. Is there a way?
