Low Virtual Memory or Virus?

Brad

HELP! My PC keeps locking up - every time I click on the
internet explorer icon the processor just seems to start
blinking rapidly and after about 5 minutes a low virtual
memory message comes up. I have run my anti-virus with
nothing coming up. I am running windows XP - I have a P4
with 512 ram.

Virtual Memory is set at custom size: 768MB Initial size
to 1536MB max

Space available 27159 MB

Please advise

Try going into internet options and blank the home page then try again and
type in say www.google.com & see if you get the same thing. Also delete temp
internet files.
Make a note of your home page if it is what you want so you can add it
later.

Those are reasonable settings - indeed the initial is perhaps over
generous. Read www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm and see if anything in the
Problems section appears relevant. I have recently heard it said too
that Norton AV 2004 has this effect - if you have that try uninstalling
it and see if that clears things. If it does, please let me know, and
scream at Symantec
