low sound

I had an hp pavilion 2 years ago and it got a loose sodder joint on my
motherboard, so I got a custom built computer with some of the hardware from
the hp. On the hp my sound was good and loud, but ever since I got my new
computer with XP on it my sound was decreased to about 1/4 of what it used to
be. I am using the same speakers. I have all my volume settings maxed
including the advanced ones and I have done the speaker test that comes with
XP which came out ok. I have tested my speakers on another computer and it
had much louder sound. Is this a sound card problem, or is there some
secret, hidden volume control that I need to adust? Please help me.

It might be a driver conflict. Make sure you have the latest drivers, if not,
the soundcard might be failing. You can get a good soundcard for $50-100 these
days.
