Low FPS *AFTER* installing DirectX 9.0b

Whats the deal? I have this problem with all my video
cards which includes my GeForce 3 Ti200, GeForce FX5600
and my ATI Radeon 9600Pro. If I do a fresh install of
winxp pro and then install games such as counter-strike
and diablo 2, these problems dont happen. In Diablo 2 at
800x600 I get about 72-90 fps, and it NEVER drops below
that, and in counter-strike I get a constant 100fps.
After upgrading to directx 9.0b I get a constant 60fps in
every game no matter which card I use. All my drivers are
up to date... what the dilly? lol. Any help here?

I've got the lowly Geforce 4 MX 440 (ever-so-slightly overclocked).
I get 91FPS @ 1024x768, in UT2003

Two weeks ago, I upgraded from DirectX 9.0a, to 9.0b, and suddenly started
getting the delightful "Unreal Tournament 2003 has encountered a problem,
and needs to shutdown...."

This had never happened previously, yet began immediately, and repeatedly
(every time), after going to 'b'. 20-30 seconds into a game, it'd shut
down. Happy to launch again, but then would crash once the game started.

I uninstalled 'b', and went back to 'a'.. and no problems....(totally
normal, again)

So yesterday, I got bored, and thought I'd try it again... And works fine!!

Great, but.... damned inconsistent. I did re-download it, but there were no
indications of error the first time... and the file sizes were the same. I
re-captured it, to test that hypothesis...

The only other software changes on my machine, in the intervening period,
were several virus definition updates.

Perhaps you could try my "method"... uninstall, then re-install. Crude, and
unanticipated, as it was... it worked.

Hi Celsian,
When you do a 'clean' install of Windows XP from the CD-
ROM, you should put the original hardware (video card)
back in BEFORE re-install on formatted hard disk. The
reason is the Windows XP CD is an OEM CD! I also
recommend 'zero-filling' your hard disk to rid the hard
disk of any 'corrupt data' or possible virus'. You can
find 'zero-fill' utilities from the hard disk
manufacturer (eg. Western Digital - www.wdc.com or
Maxtor - www.maxtor.com). Once you have reinstalled your
O/S .. be SURE to start in safemode at least once before
installing new hardware (& drivers), this way you
can 'rollback' the drivers if neccessary. Since you seem
to have problems with DirectX 9 .. simply do not use it.
(Judging from your previous fps w/dx8). If you
use 'google' .. you may find that DirectX 9 may 'disable'
Nvidia card 'at the hardware level'. Here is a helpful
