Lotus SmartSuite

Chris Weir

Hi Folks

Have just bought a copy of Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition 9.8, when I
tried to install the software I got the following error message:-

Error accessing the system registry

Is there anything I can do to get it to work. TIA.

Ask Lotus. Microsoft is not responsible for Lotus.

Hi Jon

You'd think, went to Lotus SmartSuite, page and went to there support page.
Talks about the previous OS, of windows and which ones are supported, it
says they don't support Vista and any problems go to Microsoft support. It
also says that they are not aware of any conflicts with Vista.

You might try right clicking on the install file and go to "Run As
Administrator". If that still doesn't work, right click, go to properties,
then on Compatibility. Select Windows XP SP2, and run as administrator.

If those don't work, let us know.

It sounds like it isn't running with admin privledges and needs them to
access the registry.

Yeah well immediately after I posted the URL there I went back to read it
out of curiosity, saw the link to support.microsoft.com, and sent IBM a
nastygram comment saying they shouldn't be referring users to Microsoft
support; Microsoft has fully documented the breaking changes in Vista and it
is entirely up to Lotus developers to update their product to work properly
with Vista.

like someone else pointed out, try running the installer with the "Run as
Administrator" feature.

that being said, I've used Lotus Approach and other parts of SmartSuite for
many years. it's not the best of products, and I know IBM doesn't care much
about it either.

Thanks Guys for all your kind assistance, used the run as administrator and
got it to install.

Now all I have to do is learn to use it.

I'm using the WordPro part of SmartSuite 9.8 under VISTA.

I installed from the CD but used the Compatibility Mode and Run as
Administrator as "Dustin Harper" suggests. You can do this all in one
operation if you right mouse click on the file that starts the
Installation -- probably setup.exe (make sure you have View set to show
extensions) Select Properties / Compatibility TAB and XP with SP2 and
then check [X] Run as Administrator.

That means you have to turn off / stop Autoplay from running.

Note I only installed Word Pro by doing a custom install and
deselecting everything but WordPro.

Can't do without the world's best Word Processor at my age! I used to
be on the Loutus L-Team <g>

Hi. I used Smartsuite for years. Loved those little boxes where everything
you could possibly want would be available in the one place. No trolling
through endless exploding menus to locate the function you needed.

Nowadays I'm using Textmaker and Planmaker, which work brilliantly on Vista,
but there are times I feel tempted to toss my old Smartsuite CD into the
drive and install it for nostalgia's sake. It was a very fine product.

Hi Hugh

Like I said I have managed to get the software to install.

The only problems I have now are; Vista, doesn't support help files and if I
wish to apply the latest fixes to Lotus SmartSuite, to bring it up to 9.8.4,
apparently I have to pay for it!

I only saw that after I had answered earlier in the thread. This should
make up for it!

Vista, doesn't support help files

You need to get the old help exe from VISTA -- do a search on their
knowledge base if no-one gives you the link, and if I don't find it.

Hoo-Ray Here it is:

The Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program is no longer included with
Windows operating systems starting with Windows Vista

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607/en-us

What it boils down is to copy WinHlp32.exe from an XP installation over
into VISTA and then the old Help files will work.

Have a look at Help About in your word pro and tell me what version you
have. Mine is N99.8.0208.0800 and I think I have one update from the CD
version tucked away somewhere and that may not be installed here in
VISTA but it works fine.

It's a shame that they have gone over to a pay mode but at least it is
still there.
Or you can get it from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=6EBCFAD9-D3F5
-4365-8070-334CD175D4BB&displaylang=en

which may be the better solution since they may have tweaked it?

I've never really gotten fully accustomed to floating toolboxes like
that -- they always seem to be in the way.

But working text with Frames as is the way WordPro works is a joy.

I ran a parish newsletter for years using it until later I had to put
software on their machine and so go Publisher for them.

Hi Hugh

Thanks for the pointers, and here is my version number for word pro,
N99.8.0410.0502.

I will have a look at the links you gave me. And if push comes to shove
copy the help file in question, from the XP pro disk I have access to.

here is my version number for word pro, N99.8.0410.0502.

Slightly newer than mine. I must look out that patch, apply it and see
if anything changes.
And if push comes to shove
copy the help file in question, from the XP pro disk I have access to.

I did that when I first heard of the fix and then when they posted that
additional download page, I applied that, just in case. But both worked.

You probably have to go into the main administrator role since you are
messing with system files. Note that there is a much smaller stub file
there with the same name of which the purpose is to tell you that old
HELP doesn't work! So you need to rename/delete that first. I prefer to
rename or move.

Hi Hugh

You would have to give me chapter and verse. I am not used to having to get
permission to breath, from a computer!

On which of the two things we are tlaking about? WINHLP or
Administrator account?

Hi Hugh

It was more directed to the Administrator Account, as I tried to indicate I
am used to previous versions of Windows, which didn't constantly interfere
when you tried to make adjustments to your computer. And because I have no
idea where the Administrator folders are.

As with regard to the WINHLP file, I would just need to know where to copy
it too. That should be the easy bit, but I never know with VHP.

And because I have no idea where the Administrator folders are.

I'm not able to help you on this. The way I'm setup I see I am the
Administrator. I thought there was a hidden Master Administrator account but
I don't know how you boot up to it. Someone else will have to help you on
this.

I use the procedure I've described earlier of finding the file that starts
installation and right mouse clicking on it, and either selecting Run as
Administrator in the menu or selecting Compatibility TAB and checking the box
there.
As with regard to the WINHLP file, I would just need to know where to copy
it too.

The best thing to do is to download from the Microsoft website I indicated
earlier the file WinHlp32.exe.mui which is a windows installation file with
the file in it and I assume that puts it in the right place and takes care of
the stub file you need to get rid of.

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607/en-us and scan down through the
text until you find:

Users who want to view 32-bit .hlp files must download the program from the
Microsoft Download Center, and then install it on their computers. Users who
have not installed this program on their computer will be directed to a help
topic in the Windows Vista Help and Support application. To download
WinHlp32.exe, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82148

That last link takes you to the download site with instructions and a click
on to Download the file. Make a note of where you download it to, go there
and follow the Right Mouse Click / Run as Administrator routine. That should
do it.

Sorry I can't help you more about the main Administrator question. Perhaps
I've misunderstood about it.

Hi Hugh

As far as I am aware the OS, is setup with just normal access, with the
primary user, having Vito over what will activate and what won't.
If the computer doesn't like something most of the time it will open a
window and say please type in your administrator password to authorize this
action.
Like when I right clicked on the installation.exe for Lotus SmartSuite.

I will follow your guidelines and see what stage I get to before it either
stops me or I get lost.

Yours Chris
