When Must Lotus be imported To Lotus Before/After

This question is complicated, but one that I will need to
do very shortly. I currently have an operating system of
Windows 98, and I am wishing to upgrade to Windows XP,
Home Edition. Now the complicating part, on Windows 98, I
have Lotus SmartSuite 9.0 and the end result is that I
wish to have Excel on Windows XP. Must I install a Excel
version onto Windows 98 and import my Lotus Files into it,
before upgrading, or must this all be done after
upgrading? I have a second question as well, and that is
must I get Lotus SmartSuite 9.8 which is compatible with
Windows XP in order to solve this? The only reason that I
am wishing an answer is that there are currently 3 years
of Accounts Receivable Records on Lotus SmartSuite 9.0 and
I can't afford to lose them in any way
whatsoever....Please respond asap...thank you

I have Lotus Smartsuite 9.0 running on Windows XP Professional; I
haven't had any problems with it to date, though I seldom use it. As I
recall, when I installed it Windows XP warned me that there were
compatibility issues with Lotus Approach, but it didn't have any
issues with 1-2-3.

If the files are in .wk4 format, you should GENERALLY be able to load
them straight into Excel. (Though some functions, in particular
database lookup ones, may not come across correctly.) If they're in
..123 file format, you'll need to convert them first.

It probably doesn't matter whether you do this by installing Excel on
Win 98, or whether you load both Lotus and Excel on Windows XP and
convert after that. My preference would be to take the latter
approach, though, since that way you'll still have 1-2-3 available if
you run into any problems with converting the files. (Or if you want
to go back and check the original versions for any reason.)
