when I changed computers, I lost my product key numter for
xp-home. is there a way I can used the xp cd to upgrade my
new system or is the xp cd useless?

Each installation of Windows XP, installed on a different computer,
requires a different Product Key (license). You cannot use the same
Product Key (license) on more than one computer. Therefore, you'll
need to purchase a new Product Key (license) if you lost it.

Try the following:

If your computer is still operational:

Retrieve your Windows XP CD key
