Lost Windows XP CD

P

Phil

A friend has a habit of deleting things that shouldn't be deleted. Now
he is having problems with XP. Some software does not run , hardware is not
recognized etc. I tried the software and hardware on my PC and all is Ok.
He must have deleted something causing the problem.

He bought the PC from a local store (since closed) and did not get a XP
disc. I would like to reinstall XP for him
from the recovery disc I received from my OEM, if this is possible. I have
found his XP key using keyfinder software.

Question is can I do this and how do I go about it or is there a number
we can call at Microsoft to get a new CD? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

You could try the computer's manufacturer.

Found the supposed crossposting in the XP General newsgroup. I had
originally posted it in that newsgroup then found the help & support
newsgroup.

Using OE I highlighted the message and under the message tab I sent a cancel
message. Isn't that supposed to cancel the message in the XP General
newsgroup or doesn't that work?

Sorry if it caused any problems.

First, if you sent a message to more than one newsgroup *separately*, that's
not crossposting, that's multiposting. Multiposting just fragments the
thread, so someone who answers in one newsgroup doesn't get to see answers
from others in another newsgroup. And for those who read all the newsgroups
the message is multiposted to, they see the message multiple times instead
of once (they would see it only once if you correctly crossposted instead).
This wastes everyone's time, and gets you poorer help than you should get.

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup, please do so
by crossposting (but only to a *few* related newsgroups).

Please see "What is the accepted way to share a message across multiple
newsgroups?" at http://smjg.port5.com/faqs/usenet/xpost.html

Canceling messages always has less than the desired effect. Realize that
messages are propagated to many different news servers around the world, and
very quickly. The best you can do is cancel it on your news server, but you
have no control of what appears on other servers.

Ken,

Thanks for the info about "sharing a message across multiple
newsgroups". I had tried to cancel the message but as you stated it did
not work.

Still haven't received a response to my original post. Maybe you can
help.

Thanks.

How to replace lost, broken, or missing Microsoft software or hardware
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=326246

There is a phone number there you can call regarding OEM software
where the OEM has gone out of business.

Good luck
