Consider that the only information we know is what you tell us. You have
told us very little that would help answer you accurately, not even what
version of Windows you have. You'll get generic troubleshooting or a
lucky guess. Here's my guess: Your computer is infected with malware.

Sorry for lack of info, Leonard.Just assumed that as i posted in Windows xp
help & support thought this would have explain Windows version.
Windows xp home edition, and can only explain probs as i see them,
but thanks anyway for your advice.

There are three versions of Windows XP (Home, Pro and MCE) and three
service packs issued. Which service pack do you have?

Any ideas about what might have caused these problems? Made any changes
to hardware, changes to software, changes to program settings? Any error
messages? What were you trying to do just before the problems started?
Used any registry cleaners or 'tweaking' programs now or in the past?

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

If malware is the cause of the problem and it could be you need to knock
on the head before it does more damage.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
1.38 -freeware (if you upgrade you pay).
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Run Malwarebytes' and turn off your current anti-virus
before you do to avoid a conflict. Disregard the invitation on the web
site regarding the Registry Optimiser -a Registry Optimiser is not a
helpful utility.

Does chkdsk and Task Manager work? These can also be targeted by
malware.

Hope this helps.

Run some anti-malware programs
Two free ones are MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) (There is a paid version
and a free version)
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) (Also a paid and free version)
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

Both of the free versions of the programs above will find and remove just as
well as the paid version.
The paid versions offer real-time protection and the free versions are
on-demand only.
There are a few other differences, but neither one will ask you to buy their
program to remove anything they find.
Download, install, update and then run each one separately.
I would also suggest that you delete your temp internet files, temp
files, cookies and empty your recycled bin before running either one.

PS: BTW, what antivirus program are you running?
