System restore

Robert

I'm using XP with SP2 installed on automatic updates. I have an 80Gb hard
disk. The slider in System Restore is at maximum.
When I try to do a System Restore, there is only one restore point shown and
that is very recent. I cannot go back to the previous month either. I
can make my own Restore point and that does work, but soon disappears. I'm
not in any problem, but it doesn't seem to be giving me the options for
restoring that I expect.

Why do I not have many more Restore points showing ? Help would be
appreciated.
Robert.

I've looked at these. It would appear that I shouldn't have enough disk
space - but I have only 16Gbs in use of the total of 80Gbs. Doesn't quite
add up and I'm not sure what to do. How many restore points should I have
?
Robert.

Hi Robert,

There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event Viewer for any System
Restore logs that may have been created recently that may help us in diagnosing the
problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title “Source” at the top of the source name column in the right pane to
sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the two arrows in the
upper right corner. This will copy the event information to the clipboard. Paste the
information for each of the two event here.

Hi Robert,

The amount of restore points available depends on several things.
1. The amount of disk space assigned to hold restore points.
2. The size of the restore points being generated.
3. And the amount of days the restore points are being held. The default is 90 days, and
on a First in First Out (FIFO) basis, the oldest restore points are purged.

Here are some tips on adjusting disk space for System Restore:

Hullo,

There are tons of entries, mainly Information ones. However, I've taken
the most recent of the "sr" and "srservice entries. Here they are :

Event Type: Error
Event Source: sr

Event ID: 1

while processing the file 'desktop.ini' on the volume 'HarddiskVolume2'. It
has stopped monitoring the volume.

I hope that helps. I'll look at the tips you gave on the other post now.

I'll be away most of tomorrow, so there may be a delay in my response now.

Robert.

Hi Robert,

It appears that System Restore is set to monitor drives/partitions other than the one
Windows is installed on. I would suggest turning off monitoring on all drives/partitions
other than the one Windows is installed on.

Now test System Restore by creating a new restore point named TEST.
Create a new folder in the desktop an name it TEST.
Now restore to the Test restore point.
You will receive a message if the restore was successful.
