System Restore Failure

I'm using Windows XP, SP2 on an IBM Lenovo laptop R-Series. It's running
Symantec Antivirus on a 60GB drive (only 16GB of that HD space used as of
today). It's one of many company laptops on a domain that I built myself for
our client's use. Although we have an imaging solution, unfortunately we did
not create an image of this specific (IBM) laptop before deploying it. The
first thing that I did after building it was log into an Administrator
account on that IBM laptop and 1. enable System Restore, 2. Max out it's
"disk space to use" in System Properties 3. create a restore point.
Unfortunately, the laptop was recently returned with trojan viruses on it.
Since we don't have an image on our network, I opted to run System Restore. I
ran System Restore. After the computer restarted I received the following
message..."Your computer cannot be restored...No changes have been made to
your computer." I ran System Restore once more and removed the network cable.
Same message. I uninstalled Symantec and left network cable unplugged. Same
message. Lastly, I restarted into Safe Mode and ran System Restore...Same
message appears, "Your computer cannot be restored...No changes have been
made to your computer." The laptop's System Restore points dates back three
months and I went back to the very first day of restore points. I'm not only
receiving this message on this laptop but other makes/models PCs/Laptops
running Windows XP as well. No rhyme or reason. Does anyone know how to
perform successful System Restores or what am I not doing to gain positive
System Restore results? Thanks in advance for your response(s)!
