Lost Taskbar Custom Notifications

Hello,

They are gone. I am using XP Pro Ver 2002 w/service pack 1 and all internet
updates.

I adjusted the Taskbar "Custom Notifications" a few times about 6 months ago
and forgot them. Now when I press the 'Customize' button at the bottom of
the Taskbar Tab in the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" the "Custom
Notifications" window opens but it is empty. Nada. Nothing.

Checking/Unchecking "Hide inactive icons" doesn't help even with a reboot in
the middle. Pressing "Restore Defaults" didn't help either.

As usual winXP Pro "Help and Support" didn't help. Searched the MS KB for
"taskbar "custom notifications"". Same with Google.

Any idea that might help are appreciated.

Perhaps you have disabled Current and Past Items? Do you have any icons
stored in the Notification Area? Have you disabled the Notification Area?

Workarounds for the Notification Area can be found here within my small
utility: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

If nothing there helps, post back and good luck!

Kelly,

I downloaded your utility and ran a few commands that seemed relevant.
(hide/show all listed; hide/show inactive; remove/(replace); Show missing)
No luck.

ps... I went to the wepage listed below: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com
Is it suppose to be blank?

OK Kelly thanks,

The adjustments to "Custom Notifications" was just checking off "Alway
show/Always hide/etc." for various tray icons (I don't remember all the
options). Everything worked fine until I decided to change one this week
and the "Custom Notifications" area was blank. Incidentally the icons are
still behaving as I selected "back when".

Welcome.....

If the registry keys are correct, something else is causing this. Third
party perhaps? As per my site, this may have to do with ZoneAlarm.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Kelly,

I compared the registry keys with a properly running machine they were the
same.

I disabled Zone Alarm and rebooted with no results.

Incidentally, I have discovered that the "Hide inactive icons" check box
doesn't stay unchecked when I try to change it.

I don't know where to go for help next ...

| Run the repair option from here:

I did it -- it made an successful reg entry.

| Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)
|
| To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
| and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
| right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
|

I saved and ran 'savesettings.reg' and also rebooted then checked the
customize notification area -- nothing.
