Lost taskbar and desktop icons after quarantine

I ran AntiSpyware on a PC and removed a large number of spyware objects.
When I reboot as instructed my taskbar and desktop don't appear. All I can
see is the desktop background. It appears that explorer.exe is not starting.
I can get to Task Manager and when I try to start explorer it says it
doesn't exist. Obviously, it does exist because I can see it. I'm guessing
something is getting damaged in the registry by AntiSpyware. The only way to
run again is to restore from the save right after AntiSpyware is installed
but prior to running the scan. Any ideas?

By some trial and error, I was able to clean all infected items except for
CWS.AnalyzeIE. This is the one that causes the problem. After reading other
messages I have tried the other usual remedies - running CounterSpy and
CWShredder. CWShredder doesn't find the virus. CounterSpy finds it, but
like AntiSpyware, when it attempts to remove it, I once again lose access to
explorer.exe and iexploerer.exe when I reboot. Hopefully, someone has been
able to defeat this virus.

Here's a support page for this if you want to try manually remove it,

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.startpage.o.html

It may also help to use Ewido Security Suite and scan with that and your
current Antispy programs in safe mode

Download, install, and update the free trial of ewido security suite

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background
guard" and "Install scan via context menu". Click on update in the left menu,
then click the Start update button. After the update finishes close Ewido

Now reboot to Safe Mode - Restart your computer and immediately begin
tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe
Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.

Run Ewido again. From the main menu click on 'scanner' then click 'Complete
System Scan' When ewido finds something, it will pop up a notification.
Select "Remove" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and
"Create encrypted backup" then click on ok.When the scan finishes, click on
"Save Report" and save it to your desktop or c:\drive incase you need it
again.

While still in safe mode reset the Internet Settings : Goto Start Menu then
Control Panel then to Internet Options, Click the Programs Tab and press
"Reset Web Settings" and include the homepage then press Yes, Then goto the
General Tab and enter the homepage you want to use into the space provided
and press Apply .

Reboot back to normal mode

Let us know if you have more problems

I followed the manual removal instructions on the Symantec website and that
fixed the problem.

Thanks for your help!
