Lost side bar

Using Windows XP and somehow, I have lost the (left hand) side bar which
opened when I opened a folder. Can someone tell me how to get it back?

If you're referring to Common Tasks pane:

Enable it from Folder Options, General Tab.
"Show common tasks in folders"
