I have an external HD connected by USB 2.0 (or Firewire) that I use for
backup on my home network. I share the entire drive on my main desktop
system. I do backups to the drive once a week from the computer it is
connected to and from two other systems on my network. I only turn on the
drive on the day that the backups are scheduled to run. If I turn the drive
off and reboot the system, the share is not retained when I turn the drive
back on. I decide to share the drive from a batch file using the net share
command. The batch file is executed by the task schedule a short time before
the backups are scheduled. Is there any way to make a share persistent on a
drive that isn't always on at bootup?
Also, if I leave the drive on but shutdown the computer, the drive does not
turn off. It also does not turn off through power management. Is there any
way that an external drive can be turned off by the system?
