lost external USB hard drive on peer to peer network

Guest

I have 3 up to date WinXP computers on a peer to peer network off a router
and everything was working fine (one folder plus one USB external drive on
one of the computers was being shared), then one day I could no longer access
the USB external over the network. The USB drive is still accessable from
the computer it is attached to. Also the folder on that computer that is
being shared is still accessible over the network but not the USB drive.

I tried turning off sharing on the external drive - rebooting - and then
enableing full sharing again - rebooting again and that didn't fix it.

Any ideas on what is going on? Maybe one of the resent windows updates
changed something?

Thanks for any ideas you can give me.

Can you give us the full error message you get when you try to access it?

Does it by any chance mention 'Not Enough Server Storage'...?

I'm unfortionately not at those computers during the day here (6 hours from
now I can check), but the "not enough server storage" message you mentioned
sounds really familier and I remeber being confused by it. At least a couple
of times though I got messages saying the drive was unaccessable and that I
maybe didn't have permission - maybe the messages contaned both. I do
remember something about "not enough storage" so if you point me toward a
solution for that will likely be it. Thanks

Here is the full error message:
\\Dell-judy\H-External is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resorce. Contact the administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions.
Not enough server storage is avalible to process this command.

One other thing that might be relivent. This external drive now has a large
15 or 20 gig disk image file on it now that it didn't have before - maybe
this would make it harder to display the drive over a network??

Thanks for any help. Vern

That error is usually due to a change in a fairly obscure setting caused by
antivirus software. This article contains the fix for that:

Thanks for the reply. It's looking like this Norton anti-virus issue isn't
the cause for my problem though.
- this computer came with a trial version of Norton anti-virus but it was
uninstalled and replaced with AVG anti-virus and the external drive was
accessible on the network for several weeks after this.
- there is no IRPStackSize value in the registry.

I would prefer addressing what cased this to happen rather than trying to
make it work by entering a IRPStackSize value but if I do try adding and
putting in a stacksize value do you think I should try 18 first?

Anyway, any more ideas you thoughts you might have would be appreciated.

Do you think that having a 20gig disk image file the external drive might
have had anything to do with the cause of the problem? - I may put this file
on another drive to test this.

Also I guess I should check the Acronis Trueimage site to see if they have
any reports of there software causing this. This was installed somewhere
around the time the problem started.

Thanks for your time. Vern

What caused it to happen is your antivirus nuking the setting. Fixing it is
as easy as putting it back as instructed in the KB article. Once fixed it
won't break again (unless you reinstall Norton - and given the choice
between Norton and a real virus I'd have to hunker down and think on it for
a bit).

I agree with you about Norton, I don't use it anymore either because of bad
experiences with it in the past.

My current problem isn't that black and white though as I was able to access
the external drive fine for weeks after uninstalling Norton, maybe though as
the external drive filled up, not having that line in the registry finally
caused failier and error message. At any rate it looks likely that adding
that line can give me access to the drive again. I'll probably do this after
I review registry backup and restore methods.

Thanks again. Vern
