peer-peer network

XP-PRO peer-peer setup 8 machines. Workgroup is the same on all machines.
Various drives shared.

At times any given machine will not see the machine called 'server'. I know
there is no server in a peer setup, but this
machine has the database for the program that is running on the other 7
machines. I have setup many peer-peer networks
in Win98 and XP, but have never had this problem.

When I go the My Network Places all the shared drives (on various machines)
do not show up. If I go to View Workgroup Computers
ALL the machines show up but I might not be able to access them all. It
tells me the path can't be found...ie:\\server can't be found.

Cable wise, there is a cable modem, Netgear router and 3 auto-switches.
When this network problem exists I can get on the internet on any machine
so I know the cable modem, router, switch setup is good. Also from
'server' I can see all the other machine in View Workgroup computers.

Another thing I noticed, if I map a drive on 'server' and then go to the
disconnect mapped drive screen it had mapped drives in there with no drive
letter.

This is driving me crazy. I did do one thing today. I mapped the folder
(shared) on the 'server' that all the machines needs access to. I know this
does not
need to be done, but I had to try something.

Any ideas appreciated.
