Lost Outlook Files

Im not sure how this happened but I have been having some serious problems
with a new pc so i ran the disk check utility. After rebooting, my outlook
would not open. It gave me the error message "Unable to open your default
email folders" and that my outlook.pst was not a personal folders file. When
i locate the file on my hard drive it says it is a 0kb file. How does this
happen? I do have a .bak file from a few weeks ago when i ran the inbox
repair tool but i do not know how to change the extension from .bak to .ost

Any help fixing this and understanding why or how this happened would be
appreciated.

Obviously I cant read your mind either and do not know what relavant
information you think i left out. I thought it was rather straight forward.
How do you change an extension on a file from .bak to .pst and why would
running a disk check wipe my current pst file to a 0kb file.

Let's just start with your first sentence:
"Im not sure how this happened but I have been having some serious
problems with a new pc so i ran the disk check utility."
Provide your Outlook version, a detailed account of the problems you
were having and what you did to try to correct them. None of that is
apparent.
Do you back up your data regularly? Outlook.bak from the Inbox Repair
Tool is not a backup of your data.

Initially the problem started within outlook. When I tried to access certain
folders it gave me a data error message (cyclic redundancy error) so i ran
the inbox repair tool. It could not run and stated i needed to run a disk
check so i did. The disk check went through all 5 phases of checking and took
about 9 hours to complete. The 4th and 5th phase of the search took a
majority of the 9 hours. Once finished i was able to run the inbox repair and
solve the problem. 2 weeks later I received an email stating I had run out of
room on the server and I frankly thought it was junk mail considering i have
cable service (roadrunner). the next time my computer rebooted, which was 2
days ago the disk check went through only 3 phases and corrected a bunch of
errors. When i tried to open outlook it gave me the error messages listed
below. I am using outlook 2003 professional edition with windows xp. No i do
not backup my data, im sure from now on I will start doing it once i learn
how. If htere is anyway to recover what was lost i would greatly appreciate
the info. Also any insight as to what caused this would be great but im aware
of the fact its equivalent to searching for a needle in a haystack.

I doubt there is anything we can do.
This indicates a serious problem with your hard drive, which is one of
the reasons to back up data.
