I currently have xp on this computer. The computer store that put it on
for
me gave me the disk but I lost it. My husband and I want to trade... he
has
Vista and hates it. Is it possible to get a replacement disk so we can
put
it on his computer and he can give me his vista disk?
If it's a retail version or if it's an OEM version and the OEM vendor has
gone out of business, and you have proof of purchase ,see this link:
How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware

If it's OEM and the vendor is still in business you'll need to contact them
to see if they can help.
A third option is to find someone that has the same version of XP that is
installed on your system and copy their CD. Installation CD's will work
with any product key of the same type. They have to match as to:
Home vs. Pro
Full retail vs. upgrade vs. generic OEM vs. branded OEM vs. volume license
Language version
Note: If your copy of XP is an OEM copy then by the license it's tied to
the first computer on which it's installed, and can't be moved to a
different computer. If it's retail then yes it can be. Same with Vista.
If the computer that has Vista is a new computer and Vista came preinstalled
from the manufacturer, then it's an OEM copy and by the license can't be
moved to another computer. If he purchased a generic OEM version of Vista,
that can't be moved either. If his is a retail version then it can be moved
if first uninstalled from the computer it's on.
Lastly, if his computer is new, it might not support XP. Some manufacturers
are making new models but not supplying XP drivers. So even if licensing is
not an issue, you need to research on the computer manufacturer's web site
to make sure their are XP drivers for all the hardware.
Same with your system. Before moving to Vista you need to research if there
are Vista drivers for all the hardware, if check on the compatibility of all
the software you want to run to see if it runs on Vista.
Lastly for Vista specific questions there are newsgroups for it. Here is a
list.
