Lost my start up menu

R

Rick

Help, I have lost my pop up on the bottom of my screen. I can't get in Start
to change my settings so that I can see it on my screen. The only way to get
into my DESKTOP is to press alt-ctl-delete and then run a new program
through the Windows Task Manager, which is how i managed to get into my
newsgroup program.
I unfortunately tried to restore my system to a previous date. After I had
done that my background picture shrunk to half the size and my pop-up menu
on the bottom disappeared. What did I corrupt and how do i get it back.
Right now I can't even get into any of my settings and can only turn the
computer off through the Windows Task Manager.

I tried what you suggested to no avail. I guess I didn't explain my problem
well enough. I have lost the task bar which normally appears on the bottom
of the screen. Therefore I can't shut down, or open the window that leads to
the control panel. To top it off all my onscreen desktop icons have
disappeared. I see the task bar appear as windows loads but it is white
(normally blue) and only has the start button and time showing. It then
disappears as the loading continues never to return again.

Run msconfig from Task Manager
Go to Startup Tab
Click "Disable all" button
CLick OK > Reboot
If the problem doesn't appear then launch MsConfig Again and tick items in Startup tab
one-by-one until you find the culprit.

GOOD LUCK.

Hi Rick,
Try this, Press Windows Button on your Keyboard then the Start menu will
open, Right click on the Start Button and select Prperties.
On the Taskbar be sure this options is selected under Taskbar appearance
[√] Lock the taskbar
[√] Keep the taskbar on the top of other windows
[√] Group similar taskbar buttons
Click [OK] to confirm your Settings and hopefully you will find the Taskbar
showing and shiny again.
HTH.
Please let us know.

It made no difference doing these steps from safe mode. One the strange
things that I notice is the internet explorer is missing from my desktop.
Also when I do a system restore, a warning pops up indicating that some of
the Active Shield components have not been installed. I don't know what all
this means. Something is corrupted somewhere.

Try this and let me know, while I will for something in the registry for you,
but it will be helpful if you name the missing shield if you remember them.
Right Click on the Desktop and select Properties.
On the Display properties click on Desktop Tab then on Customize Desktop, on
the Desktop Items window check this box under Desktop Icons:
[ ] Internet Explorer.

Then try to press the Windows KEY + R to open the Run Command and type in
the text box:
sfc /scannow click [OK} and wait for it to finish, get your XP CD handy
it may asked you to insert it in to repair the damaged/corrupted files/folder
found on the system.
Reboot your machine and see if that helped.
If no joy open the Run command again and type this time:
eventvwr click [OK] on the Event viewer window look for Error messages and
send them here in your next post

Sorry, but your first suggestion doesn't work because when I right click the
desktop nothing happens. As for the tweaks 119, how do I download this file
so that it affects my registry. Does just clicking it work?

G

Guest

Yes download the tweaks by clicking on the link a pop-up will tell to save or
open or cancel save on your desktop and double click to open it, and it line
* 117* not line 119.

Try to scan for Malwares and Viruses, the error message is for Business
Contact Manager which installed on your Computer and for some reason it can't
contact the database server to retrive the data, or it may corrupted.
Also what Anti-virus you have instaled, it is look like the AV also looking
for Update and can't get it.
You may end up uninstalling BCM and start over, try to rescue your contacts
and Data by any means you may need a new installation?.
Read this and see if it will help:
http://www.outlookpower.com/issues/issue200407/00001335001.html
If you have any thing else please mention it as we have been troubleshooting
in the Dark!.

MC Scan, it is for McAfee it is llooks corrupted for me som please scan with
another vendor for both Malwares and Viruses.
http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan
http://www.trendmicro.com
And also for malwares from here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D
But did you get your Taskbar or not yet?.
P.S are you using BCM with Outlook or with web mail?.
HTH.

No, I haven't got my taskbar back.
I don't believe I use BCM for anything. I don't use Business Contacts.
I scanned the computer for viruses and there isn't any. There was 60 cases
of spyware and 4 hacker ware. I don't think they are my problem.
I am just going into search malware now.
This is really a drag.

Where there is nothing on your screen press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring the Task
Manager. Run a "New Task" and type "explorer.exe" and press Enter key. See if
this bring up everything.

If everything comes up for a second and then again gone, you surely need to
scan your computer for Malware and Spyware.

Hope this help, let us know!

Explorer.exe will not load. I am still stuck with a startup screen that
consists of a minimized desktop picture surrounded with a blue border and
nothing else. This whole issue began with my NHL04 game running so slowly
that I decided to get rid of a program that took up a look of space and was
not being used. The program was Dreamweaver. My NHL game by the way changes
the resolution of the screen. The game did not speed up appreciatively so I
shut down the game and computer. Next startup and voila.

First try this: [Open Task Manager - Run new Task - type REGEDIT and press
enter.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File
Execution Options\explorer.exe

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File
Execution Options\iexplorer.exe

Once these keys are deleted the desktop and internet explorer should come
back to life. Find those keys. Delete them and make a restart. Hope you will
get your Desktop back. Found this while searching web. Working for any users.

Otherwise
=======
I will suggest you to run your Windows in Safe Mode then first step is to
Uninstall the application that cause the problem. Check out the Add/Remove
Prorgams and uninstall those unwanted applications. While in Safe Mode, click
Start - Run - type MSCONFIG and press enter. From the Startup tab uncheck all
or those entries you have doubt about. Run your Anti-Spyware software and
make sure that your system is clean enough.

If this is what you've already done then give it a try. In Safe Mode, create
a New User Account with Administrative Privileges from Control Panel. Restart
and try login to that account. See if this help.

Else try this in Run window through Task Manager:

sfc /scannow

Secondly, try to do a System Restore from Command Prompt
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304449

If System Restore is giving error messages then try this:
For the System Restore problem, you can try reinstalling it. To do this (and
you may need a Windows CD), Make sure "show hidden files" is enabled in
Folder Options > View. The navigate to c:\Windows\INF and locate:

sr.inf

Right click on that and select "install".

if you cannot get System Restore working, is sometimes resolved by
reinstalling Internet Explorer. Install it from a CD or download it from
Internet?

Last but not least, download and run Adaware SE and some kind of registry
mechanic to repair registry and see if they help.

Let us know, which one works for you.
