lost my documents

I reinstalled windows xp he in the mode that was supposed to keep my files
untouched but they're all gone now. Instead I have c:\userdat that I can't
access and HDD didn't add in free memory. Any ideas how to get my documents
off the hard drive, well if they're still there, without using deleted files
retreaving soft?
