Recovering lost my document

hai need your help.
my pc is windows xp professional SP2
one of my friend was aksing my laptop for a day.
i tried to create an account for him so that he cannot see my documents. but
i was unable to add new user id. i really forgot the error message.
so after lots of effort i decided to change my previliage from
administrator to guest and gave my pc to him(i also changed an easy password
and gave pc to him)
after i got back my laptop i noted that all my desktop settings have gone
even my documents. my laptop desktop were looking as though its brand new. i
had to re-create my outlook and everything. as though like day 1.
so i signed in as a administrator and changed back my account previlage to
administrator and then signed into my accont. but i noted that all my
documents have gone.(same as guest)
same user name but only i changed my admin previliage to guest previliage
and lost all my documents, my outlook emails also gone.

is there a way to get these files back.

i took backup of my pc only in february and after that i did not do any
backups.
so if i do a restore then all my mails and files will be from february.

i tried also to use restore to nearest date. but that restored only my
settings i could not see my files either in outlook or my documents.

is there a way to find my lost documents.

thanks & regards,
vinod

Try opening up my computer and going to C: then to Documents and Settings
Folder. Now see how many folders in there have your name or variations of
your name. If there are a few variations of your name like mine I have Joe
from before I joined our domain and now my new one is Joe.kemco. Your files
should be in the original folder say you named it vinod and there is a vinod
and a vinod.001. Your files should be in the vinod folder under my documents.

Your email should be under vinod(user account where u should be in)>local
settings>application data>microsoft>outlook there should be a .pst file and
some other files there. However you will have to be able to view hidden
folders to get to this point. To do so click on tools at the top then folder
options then the view tab then within there click show hidden files and
folders and apply it. There is also other information reguarding your email
in the vinod>application data>microsoft>outlook folder.

This is all assuming you use outlook not outlook express then it is totally
different but you did say outlook. Anyway good luck and get back with us I
will be gone for the weekend but I hope this helps you in some way.

Dear Joe,
thanks for your reply.
I tried all this but no luck.
when i go into documents and settings i can see administrator , vinod ,
vinod.ourdomainname, defualt user(after clicking tools , folder options,
display hidden files)
when i go into all of these folder(even after loggin in as administrator) i
could not find any thing . its shows only current documents which were
created after this silly mistake

also i could not find the pst files. all i could find is the current
emails(for last few days)

i am using outlook(ms office 2003)

Also all my internet favourites in my IE have gone.

is there a way to recover my favourites(IE), my documents.

all the files in C drive are intact. only my documents vanished.

i had a habbit of storing everything in my documents. i did not even create
a partition.

now i learnt that if i had a partition and if i had stored my files there i
would have had this problem.

as told windows recover did not do the magic. it just brought back the icons
in my desktop and some files which i stored in desktop.when i open outlook
after restore its asking me where to find the pst or archive file. so windows
restore did not work for me.

i still have a full backup dated february but i donot want that as i would
lose everything till date.

is there any way out of this.

thanks,
vinod.k

I read about your problem a few days ago and wondered if anyone got a
solution. Thought I mentioned something that happened to me.

A few weeks ago, I lost the "My Dcuments" folder, "My Favorites", "Desktop
settings" etc, all due to a corrupt "user profile". As I had a backup, I
restored the "Documents and Setting" folder, and things went back to normal

While my backup was from the day before, whereas yours is from February, I
think restoring the Feb settings, that is the settings only, is worth a try
since you got nothing now. You got nothing to lose

Looks like you might have missed up the user profiles doing what you did.

I also keep everything in "My Documents", losing everything put me into a
big panic. I'd be curious if you get hold of some "undelete" software and
find the missing documents that way. I am sure it's still on your laptop, and
the more you use it here on it, the more you'll overwrite your old data still
on there.

I learned the hard way, losing data, although I also use a laptop at home, I
have a Desktop in a Home Network serving as a "server", and I always keep
another copy of the file on the Desktop, and the desktop is automatically
backuped up to a USB drive, and as I also own a business, have "on line
backup" as well. In other words, when I save a file to the laptop, I save
another copy to the "server".

A few seconds more each time saving an extra file is worth it. And I had a
friend that lost his computer in a burglary, and he lost three years of work
because he had no backup.
