lost internet connection

My new guardian child has a HP system (XP IE 6.0)which had several virus on
it. I ran Norton on it as well as Spyware are removed as many corrupted
files as I could. Unfortunately some of the files were for IE and now the
system cannot get a current IP address and I get the "Page cannot be
displayed" message. The connection shows 100.0 mbps so the system has the
connection but IE cannot see the connection. I have tried to force the
system to go to a specfic IP address but still does not work. On a postive
note the system runs faster after all the spyware and virus's have been
removed.

any suggestions on how to restore IE with a good IP address. As she has
just moved in we cannot find the manuals to do a system reload

thanks

Hi Ed :)

Often in teh course of removing a virus or spyware, the connection is lost,
or the Winsock is damaged or corrupted. Try the following and see if it
helps.

Download, install and run a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, download, install and run a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
also
From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
also ....
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

or ........

Winsock Fix Utility

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps
