Lost Internet connection Possible virus

I have lost Internet connection. I think that I have or had a virus
(w32.Sober) which I've just cleaned off the computer. But the connection is
still broken. I have Comcast Cable modem (RCA DMS245 Or somthing likethat.)
The strange thing is that everything is working fine, as if the connection
should be good. They see the modem from their office, and they see that it's
online. We uninstalled the network card and unplugged the ethernet cable from
the back of the computer. The computer recognized that the cable was
unplugged and upon reboot it not only recognized the network card as a new
device, but it installed it and identified it when it was complete. We turned
off all firewalls, virus protection, anti-spy ware, popup blockers and
everthing. We checked the IP addressed et al. But nothing is working.

The only thing that didn't work was that we tried to repair the IP address
and it said that it failed. We went to to IPCONFIG release and renew all but
it say no adapter installed (what does that mean?). We also tried to ping
the ip but it said that it failed to reach destination.

As you can see, we did everything but there is something wrong. I use
Windows XP professional. I also am using Internet Explorer 6. Any help
would be appreciated.

I was able to install a virus protection on my computer and scanned it. I
found and cleaned a virus called w32.sober. Could that be killing the
connection?
