Lost "index" from "help & support" taskbar

Before i state what happened,i must tell you that this
computer"stuff"is new to me! Here's the problem: Nothing
shows up in the "index" box when i try to use the index
icon on the Help & support" taskbar.I was tol to do a
disc scan , which i did,using the command promt
(sfc/scannow).I don't know what the outcome because
nothing showed one way or the other.(how do i get the
results?). I was told to do this before doing a total
restore but i need to know if i have any corrupt files
first.Can anyone help me? Sincerely, Joan.
