Win XP Pro is OS.
When I go START>HELP AND SUPPORT>INDEX the index box on the left opens with
nothing but a red X in a small box in the upper left corner on the box that
the index should be listed in. I can search for something and the index for
the item searched for will display.
Can someone please tell me how to correct this?

I'd right click C:\WINDOWS\inf\Pchealth.inf and select install, have your xp
cd handy.

I am having the same problem you describe, but was unable to follow the
instructions from Black Baptist. Have you resolved this? If yes, how?

Post your system information (Service Pack level, hotfixes applied etc).
For XP Pro, type in Start/Run:

CMD /C SYSTEMINFO >C:\Sysinfo.txt

Then open C:\Sysinfo.txt in Notepad and post the contents here.

Disabling Hhctrl.ocx prevents Internet Explorer from instantiating the
control. This configuration causes program compatibility issues. Some
examples of such issues are:

In Help and Support Center, the Index feature no longer works.
In HTML Help, features such as Related Topics and Shortcuts no longer work.
Features that are provided by the HTML Help control in Enterprise intranet
programs no longer work

I was able to follow the instructions up to #4. I saved the two documents on
my desktop. I'm stuck now.

How do I test the batch file?

Can you explain step #5 in plain English? 5d refers to a GPO I should have
created earlier.

Can you walk me through this?

Steps 3 & 4 are not necessary for stand-alone systems. Simply right-click
the "EnableHhctrl.reg" file that you've already created, and then choose
Merge. That's it.
