Lost files

I run Win XP since more than 1 year and all has
functioned well untill I recently wanted to move a folder
from one place to another by drawing it with the mouse in
Win Explorer. The folder name appeared at the correct
place but it was locked and access denied. The original
folder was gone. I am sole user of the computer and thus
I am the administrator of the machine. How to get hold of
my picture files??? There are also a few other files in
another folder where access is denied

You need to take ownership of the folder and then set the necessary
permissions.
