Lost email

I am probably using the wrong newsgroup, if so, please point me in the
right direction. Using Windows XP, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
I save special emails in the side bar folders. When I went to look for
a receipt, all of the emails are gone. I have about 25 different folders to
insert different emails into. Not all of the emails are gone, just the
items in about 10 of the folders. Could someone tell me what happened? Why
did the computer eat some of the email and not all of it and where did it
go?
