Lost DSL Connectivitiy

We had internet access (DSL) until we enabled the firewall function in the
Windows XP Security Center and also downloaded the new malicious software
update from microsoft. We lost connection and when we would open internet
explorer we would get the message...no server found. We went back into the
security center and turned the firewall off but we still do not have a
connection. We have turned the computer off and reset default settings in the
security center. On the networking screen, we checked all settings and they
are correct. Does anyone have any ideas?

First try to scan for malwares and clean up the Temp, run disk cleanUp on
your drive.
Then open your Run Command and type:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
netsh winsock reset
Reboot your machine and try to connect.
Here are software you can download on a CD:

Be sure your modem all Lights (three) are green and there is connectivity
signals.

How do I scan for the malware if I can not get to the internet to download a
security software...that was my next step was to download a security software
suite that I had already purchased online but with no connection, I'm hosed.

From this computer you are writing from on a removable CD/DVD.
There a free AV like Avast, AVG free and ZoneAlarm Firewall are free, but
you need to establish connection first.

The glib answer is to download the tools you need using another computer
and burn the files to a CD or DVD or load them on a thumb drive.

However, another computer isn't always available.

What network settings did you check on "the networking screen" (do you
mean "Network Connections") and what were they?

How do you connect to your DSL service? Do you have a router or is your
computer connected directly to the DSL modem? What is the make/model of
the modem? How is the modem connected to the computer (Ethernet or
USB)? Are you using the Windows XP PPPoE connection or are you using
connection software you obtained from your ISP? Did you get a username
and password from your ISP (just yes or no; don't post that info here)?
