Lost Drivers

Hi All,

I have recently purchased two new bits of software that shoud be "plug and
play" a USB skype phone (two!) and a Sony micro vault tiny. Neither of these
items work!! Neither of the skype phones work. I therefor think it unlikely
that there is a fault with the phones or flash memory.

On going into device manager it shows the USB devices as not having drivers!
However on investigating web sites and the litrature with the products there
are no drivers as the drivers should be in windows xp and be plug and play!!
Using the new hardware wizard with the CD in place it can not find any
drivers. The manufacturers say the drivers are standard in Windows XP.

Is it possible that the "built in" drivers have been deleted or corrupted
and if so how can I reinstall them. I am operating a sony laptop with windows
XP professional and no windows CD! The sony comes with restore disks but no
seperate windows CD.

Thnaks for any advise. PS I am currently on posting to Kazakhstan so can not
"pop" down to my local shop for advice or take the products back to London
Heathrow duty free where they were brought!!

XP should indeed have default drivers for these USB devices.

With nothing plugged into any USB port (not mouse, keyboard, nothing), try
using the XP device manager to "uninstall" the USB controllers. Note
plural, there are usually several of them, one per USB port. Then, ask the
device manager to detect new hardware. It should see the controllers and
automatically load the correct drivers.

If you normally use USB mouse/keyboard, temporarily borrow the older PS2
style mouse and keyboard and use those.

However, if the PC has no legacy ports for PS2 style hardware, then I
suggest that you contact the PC maker for advice, since incorrectly
uninstalling the USB controllers could leave you unable to use the mouse or
keyboard to reinstall USB.

Thanks Bob, Unfortiunatly while trying to uninstall teh drivers I must have
doen something wrong or the loss of the drivers was just the start of a more
serious problem as I had a fatal error and had to completely reinstall the
whole syatem and software - a long and painful job but probably the best
thing in the end. All now works well and is functioning correctly
Thanks Mike
