Lost Data when Running XP System Restore Tool!

Was having problems, so, like a good little XP user, I ran the System Restore
tool...confident in the knowledge that it doesn't affect data and is totally
"reversible." Well, much to my chagrin, I lost all of my Works word
processing documents! The file they were in just disappeared!

Calling all computer experts...any ideas? I've run the restore tool
numerous times specifying earlier dates. I've done every search that I know
how to do! You all are my last hope before I break out the recovery disc...

Irishboy,

Did you try undoing your last restore before you ran SR "numerous times"?

Yes that would probably have given you your problem back, but then you might
also have gotten your WP docs back and been able to save them to a floppy/CD
before running SR again.

Incidentally, what's on the recovery disc that will give you back your
missing file?

Colin.

Actually, the first thing I did was try an "undo." No go...the files were
lost already. Then I tried to go back even earlier and, again, no go...

By recovery disc, I am referring to the original factory software CD. I
have subsequently copied all of my other data and am just going to "wipe the
slate clean" in order to solve my problem.

Overall, I am not too impressed with the System Restore Tool. It's my own
fault really. A little voice told me to back up the files regardless of how
confident Microsoft is in its toy. That's my advice to anyone using the
system restore tool. Regardless of what the instructions say, BACK UP YOUR
PERSONAL FILES!

Daft question maybe, but your docs *were* in 'My Documents', yes?
Only I've done a number of restores in the past and have never had anything
deleted which was in there. According to MS, nothing in 'My Documents' is
monitored by System Restore and should not be affected.

You should be backing up important files no matter what tool you plan to
use or even if you don't use any tools. It's not a matter of if but
when data loss occurs.
