lost categories

For some reason I've lost all my custmised categories in Outlook 2003 from
the category list and master list. They are still attached to items such as
tasks but not in the pull down pick lists so I can't add them to new items.

I realise I can retype them but I wondered what had caused it and if I can
reinstate them somehow without retyping them?

Since the master category list is stored in the Windows registry, something must have happened to your registry.
