loss of standby mode

After downloading the latest microsoft update on 09/04/03
the computer turned off-on the restart I find I no longer
have a standby mode. Can someone tell me what needs to
be done to restore the standby mode? Thanks

Uninstall the update or use system restore to go back to a restore
point previous to installing the update.
