Loss of fonts on startup

When starting up my PC the default system font had
changed to Martlett (which is just loads of symbols). I
managed to get a basic font up and running so that I
could at least read the menus and icons, but on
restarting it returned to Martlett as the default.
A system restore seems to have sorted it out, but why did
it happen in the first place?
Has anyone had any similar experiences?

The system may have crashed, you may accidentally have made some change,
perhaps you have some spyware or virus or perhaps something you recently
installed made the change.

You might want to make sure your antivirus software is up to date run a scan
of your system. Also, download, install and run Ad Aware:
