A few days ago when I turned my P4 computer with WinXP
pro on it booted up fine but all characters on the screen
where garbled. They are actually using a font I saw in MS
Word called Martlett. I don't know how this occurred and
once got the system to normalize using system restore. A
couple of days later the same thing has happened and now
system restore does not work for me. I have searched for
a way to change the system font and see if I can work
around this problem and I cannot do this. Does anyone
have any idea what could be the cause of this problem and
how to solve it? Thanks in advance!

Possible reason:

Does your display look garbled when booting-up like bootup screen?
If yes.... Bad card [probably memory]

If no -
Goto Display Properties:
Right click on any empty Desktop anywhere > Setting.
Do you see your video card model? BTW, what model of the card do you have?
If you see "Standard Display..." Look for your display adaptor driver. It
should be on a CD DISC. If missing CD disc or some kind of media, then goto
the maker of that card.

Alternative while you do not have the proper driver for that Display
Adaptor.
Can you still change any Resolution or Screen Size higher than 640x480 or
800x600.
Can you change your color to either High or True Color?

After driver installed to your Display Adaptor, can you go back to Display
Properties and do the following above?

After driver install and set the setting but does not stick.
Check in your BIOS of your mainboard for the following:
Assign an IRQ for VGA
or
Allocate for Interrupt for Video
It should be either set to Yes or Enable.
