Losing WiFi connection...

I recently got a notebook computer, and so I dug out the old 802.11g
router so I could use it around the apartment. In my old residence, I
used it, but there were no other networks detectable, and I had no
problems. Now I have neighbors with WiFi networks.

Now, about every 5-10 minutes, I lose my connection. It seems to be
when the list of available networks changes, either losing sight of a
network or finding a new one. I have to click the taskbar icon, and
reconnect every time it happens (though since I am listed as the
prefered network, it is always the one selected). The computer is only
30 feet at most from the router, and the connection is always
"excellent", but the connection gets dropped every 5-10 minutes and I
have to manually reconnect.

Is there anyway to prevent the dropping of the network connection, or
to reconnect automatically (I'm thinking along the lines of the old
"keep alive" programs for dialups)? it is just very annoying, not only
to reconnect, but the fact is I am retyping this message because I
lost the connection as I was trying to send this.

Thanks in advance

Are you using an open network connection, or do you have
something else confgured other then "default". Go into
your router and create a different SID (other then
default). Enable encryption in the router and on your
wireless card as well. You could also set the router to
accept only connections from specifc mac addresses only.
YOu would have to program that in maually. To get the mac
address, on your computer open a command window and type
ipconfig. It will show you the mac address. This should
help your problem.
