losing internet connection since last update of windows xp

Hi Folks....it's been happening for about 2 weeks now...I power up the pc, go
online with my cable-modem and then after about 5 mins, the internet
connection just stops working.

If I'm using IE7...error is "can not connect to website" and I get an option
to diagnose my internet connection.....which I do..then problem goes
away...untill another 5-10 mins...then the same process happens again....

If I'm using another internet demanding program, it simply stops getting
data from the internet....and acts like connection has shut down....I then
have to got to IE7, try going to a site, and sure enough, connection is gone
and I have to diagnose the thing again and the problem goes away.....

What's going on here?? Cable modem shows eveything ok....ISP confirms all
is ok, except when the connection is gone.....then they see me as "off-line"
or not connected. No problem with cable modem.....

Please advise.....thanks.....

Here's a thought though I doubt it'll apply to a Cable Modem:

How do you get mail? Does OE(?) check for mail every five minutes? If
OE, and "Yes", deselect the option to "Hang up after sending and receiving".

Try this, go to the NIC in device manager, r-click, and Properties,
Power tab, and deselect "Allow computer to turn off this device...."
