losing history between sessions

I have IE6 Version: 6.0.2800.1106IC wint Win2K SP4.
After a crash I re-installed IE6.
The history is no longer saved between sessions; this
shows as visited Links being shown in the "not visited
Links" colour when IE6 is exited and re started.

Within the same session, visited links are shown correctly.

Days to keep pages in history: is set to 30.
Ideas?
