IE6.0 History/Visited Links issue

B

Bill R.

Greetings. I've encountered something new regarding my
IE6.0 History and visited links capabilities. For the
last two days (since 12/11/03), no websites that I have
visited have been added to my History folder. And any
links that I have followed in those two days have not
been re-colored (from blue to pink) to indicate that I
have already clicked on those links (though
sites/documents that I visited before 12/11 are still in
my History and their links did not revert back to blue).

This problem is particular to my account, also. My
wife's account on our system (we are using XP Home
edition 5.1 w/Service Pack 1) does not have the same
problems. I have deleted some of the older items in my
IE History folder (thinking that perhaps it was out of
space), but this did not solve the problem. I'm hoping
to avoid clearing my whole History folder, because I use
the link colors to keep on top of which contributions to
particular websites are new (i.e. that I haven't seen
yet).

If anyone else has encountered this issue, or knows of a
solution, please respond to me at (e-mail address removed)
(since I rarely check the newsgroups). Thanks very much
for your time.

It sounds like one of the many problems in IE which can be cleared up by purging the TIF cache.

Here's how to purge the cache manually:

From the IE menu, click on Tools > Internet Options. In the General tab click on the Delete Files in the Temporary Internet files section. You'll be presented with an option to delete the offline content as well...that helps also.

If you want to have this done automatically and your surfing habits are such that you do not need to reuse the existing files in the TIF folders, you can configure IE to purge the files whenever IE is closed. To implement this feature, click on Tools>Internet Options>Advanced [tab]. Scroll down the Settings to the Security section and enable "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed".

Enabling this setting does not affect History and Cookies nor does it delete the offline content.
